The Beginning of Sending Freedom’s Message: Juneteenth

Long ago on this day
People who looked like me
Shackled and bound
Were told they were free

I thank those who chose to fight
So we can have a better life
Yes, we’ve made strides
And ahead there’s much work
For some have yet to see our worth

We have the same credentials
And though we’re as essential
Differentials among us persist
So I insist on sharing this message

Let me be clear
Living in a bubble
Denying our struggle
Won’t make it disappear

I’m a part of you
You’re a part of me
We have varying shades
But we’re the same
We were made to be equals
That’s why I need you
And you need me, too
